Clean up Mac
In a race with time
If your Mac is not as responsive towards you as it used to be some time ago, don’t vent out your anger and frustration on it. There is a reason why Macs, or any other sophisticated computing device for that matter, get slow and rusty with the passage of time. Instances of Mac OS responding late to your commands or not responding at all are bound to increase with time. If anything else, an increasing frequency of such irresponsiveness is a wakeup call for you to give it some due attention.
Why Macs slow down with time
So, why does Mac OS slow down with time? There is tons of data stored on your hard-drive that has accumulated over many years of usage; stored files, history, logs, caches, system files, security settings log etc. just as we cannot expect an overweight person to run fast, especially right after having a lavish meal, Mac too can’t be expected to do the same unless you are willing to help it shed some extra pounds?
Steps To Clean Up Mac
The best thing way you can help your Mac is by cleaning it up. However, before you start deleting unnecessary files and folders, be sure to make an essential backup of all critical data on an external hard-drive. Once you are done backing up all critical data, follow these quick and simple steps to optimize your Mac’s performance:
1. Activity Monitor – Mac has an integrated Activity Monitor that allows you to view all the active system processes and third-party applications that it is running in the background. Here you can check the various applications and processes that are of little use to your Mac. Once you are done scrutinizing the list, you can end applications and processes without wasting much time. Activity Monitor also allows you to stop application running at startup.
2. Free Your Hard-drive of Unnecessary Data – The one disadvantage of having a huge storage capacity is that you can fill in as much data as you like on it. This is a major reason why your Mac slows down with time as it is an increasingly tedious task to maintain logs and records of all the data on hard-drives. Therefore, it is imperative that you delete all unnecessary files that you think no longer serve your purpose. It is also worth your gain to delete caches, logs, cookies and browsing history as they also take much space.
3. Do Some Maintenance – the last step is more of a future maintenance procedure than a performance optimizing one. You can use Mac’s in-built Disk Utility servicing tool to make sure that your disks are in good condition. Disk Utility tool checks for permission, repairs damaged sectors and identifies lost clusters. The tool is a quick and easy way of repairing your hard-drive to ensure optimized performance. However, while you are running the Disk Utility tool, make sure that no heavy-duty applications and processes are running in the background.
